BEC 151 - Learning through Giving

HFCC Business and Economics Instructor Jared Boyd received an HFCC Presidential Mini-Grant of $2,500 from the College in 2012 to fund his “Learning Through Giving,” a project that helps students learn about the importance of supporting global charitable organizations that assist people in need.

BIO 139 - Serving U of M Dearborn's Children's Garden

Judy Kelly's Environmental Science lab will join U of M Dearborn students in a similar course to assist in removing invasive plants and improving the condition of the forested area as well as clear the children's garden for Spring planting.

POLS 131 - National Political Issues Week

Annually, each fall, activities throughout the week raise students' interest in upcoming elections and provide an opportunity for college students across the country to tell political candidates what issues matter to them.

ART 2936- Teaching Ceramic Tile technique and creation of tile mural at O.W. Best Elementary School

The "Topics In Studio Art: Service Learning Through Ceramics" class, in partnership with two 7th grade classes at Best Middle School, works together to produce a twin set of ceramic murals. One mural will be permanently mounted on a hallway wall at Best Middle School while the other will be permanently hung in a public space (hopefully a hospital or similar environment) in the community.

ENG 081 - Book Drive for Dearborn Elementary Schools

Carla Bell's Developmental College Reading course held a book drive. They collected over 300 gently used or new books to donate to area schools. The students in Carla's class wrote a reflection paper about their experiences of collecting and distributing the books.

ARA 132 - Translation at dinner designed to introduce non-Muslims to Islam

Adnan Salhi took the students from his Elementary Modern Standard Arabic class to a dinner organized by the Islamic Center of America. The center invited different churches in the Dearbon area to increase their awareness and knowledge of Islam. The students from his classes translated to the attendees the proceedings of the event.

ENG 092 - Recording significant memories at Oakwood Senior Center

In "Basic Writing for the non-Native" the students visited Oakwood center to video-record memories shared by the senior residents. The seniors in turn helped the students express and translate as they developed their oral and written language skills. Students kept a journal of their experiences to earn credit in the course.

DNCA 221-24 - Full Circle Coreographs and Teaches at Center for Advanced Studies and the Arts (CASA)

Adjunct Amy Guilmette started before the Fall semester with interested students enrolled in DNCA 221,222,223, and 224 to coreograph a dance they could teach to an area high school. During the semester, all students in the course participated in 'setting' the dance with the high school students. This service learning experience culminated in high school students from CASA performing a number in Full Circle Dance's Fall performance.
